John Neal is hard working and diverse. He has been licensed since 1978 and has broad experience in state and federal courts. John spent much of his youth with his grandfather, a small-town sole practitioner who taught him the ethics and sense of fairness of Atticus Finch. He was one of the youngest students ever admitted to the University of Tennessee, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a J.D. He is an outdoorsman who understands the needs and problems of both businessmen and individuals, whether rich or poor. Mr. Neal operates a small law firm in West Knoxville, but provides the same services you would expect to find in a much larger group. He frequently travels to other jurisdictions, and invites you inquires no matter where you live in the state of Tennessee. You’ll find Mr. Neal in a cowboy hat more often than a suit…. but you will quickly learn that he is a dedicated advocate who will fight for every one of your rights.

About Our Company

John Neal has practiced law in Knoxville since 1978. He began his practice working for a small firm that specialized in commercial collections, and was then hired to represent the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in connection with the Butcher Bank failures in the early 1980s. His work primarily involved the City and County Banks of Campbell and Knox County, and United American Bank of Knox County. This work gave him a broad spectrum of experience in both state, Federal, Bankruptcy, and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mr. Neal represented the FDIC and several banks in many different types of complex litigation, such as the bankruptcies of Jake, C.H. and Sonya Butcher, foreclosure of property associated with the Knoxville World’s Fair, repossession of all equipment at a Kentucky strip mine, and major lien litigation against the Tennessee Valley Authority.
When the FDIC’s work in Knoxville was done, Mr. Neal continued to work in banking, became a Panel Bankruptcy Trustee, continued his commercial litigation practice, and also began to work on insurance related matters.

The insurance practice eventually diverged into numerous sub specialties. Mr. Neal has handled hundreds of defense and insurance coverage matters, and his litigation experience has included civil rights, products liability, professional liability, personal injury, business disputes, intellectual property, banking, and bankruptcy. Mr. Neal has also written and lectured on the subjects of foreclosure procedures and insurance coverage.
